Freehand Los Angeles - A historic Commercial Exchange building with rooftop pool, award-winning bars, and Israeli dining

Located in Downtown Los Angeles's former Commercial Exchange building, this Los Angeles hotel features Roman & Williams-designed interiors throughout its rooms and public spaces. The 4-star Freehand Los Angeles houses multiple dining venues, including The Exchange restaurant serving Israeli cuisine and locally-sourced ingredients, and Cafe Integral offering Nicaraguan coffee selections. The property's award-winning Broken Shaker rooftop bar, recognized as Tales of the Cocktail's Best American Hotel Bar, serves handcrafted cocktails with homemade elixirs. Guest rooms feature 43-inch LED TVs, work desks, and seating areas, while some offer skyline views through oversized windows. The property provides both private rooms and shared accommodations with custom cedar bunk beds. The Museum of Contemporary Art is 1 mile away, while LA Live entertainment complex is within 0.5 miles.

Pros

Winner of Tales of the Cocktail's Best American Hotel Bar award and James Beard Award finalist

Rudolph's Bar & Tea offers unique tea-infused cocktails and full tea service

Custom-designed interiors by renowned firm Roman & Williams

On-site boutique Flowerboy sells local artisanal goods

Cons

Overnight valet parking costs $59.40 including tax

Pool chairs are not reservable and operate on first-come basis

“The rooftop bar, a recognized spot in Esquire's 'Best Bars in America', pairs city views with handcrafted cocktails; inside, the echoes of the historic 1924 Commercial Exchange building meet modern Mexican flavors. A cultivated community vibe encourages mingling around the rooftop pool, though light sleepers might find the downtown energy seeping through vintage windows.”

i really admire the staff, they were straight up and helpful, it seemed like a true refuge. the room was nicely decorated, very clean, and secure, just what i needed. i felt so cared for, like a west coast dream come true.
the glazing in the room needs help, it let in too much noise from the street below. the sound bothered me at night.

Acceptable Stay with Notable Issues

spacious roomsignificant noisestrong odor
The room was spacious enough for my needs .
The noise from outside was a PROBLEM. Taco trucks parked right across from the building and customers created noise late into the night. The gym was also small and lacked ventilation. The smell of body odor was quite strong.

constant noiseunhelpful staff
the room faced the street, so the noise was constant. i found it hard to sleep (i really needed some rest). plus, i didn't get any help when i asked about storing my luggage after checkout. the staff seemed uninterested and didn't offer any solutions. this was really frustrating because i had a late flight and didn't want to lug my bags around all day.
