Hotel El Rancho - A historic Route 66 landmark with Hollywood heritage and Southwestern dining

Located in historic downtown Gallup along Route 66, this 2-star Gallup hotel occupies a storied ranch-style building that has hosted numerous Hollywood legends since the 1940s, including Robert Mitchum, Katherine Hepburn, and John Wayne. The property features a grand lobby with an oversized fireplace, curved staircase, and local stone details. Hotel El Rancho maintains uniquely decorated rooms and suites, including specialized accommodations like the John Wayne Suite with a full kitchen. The Silver Screen Restaurant serves American and Mexican dishes from 8 AM to 9 PM daily, while the 49er Lounge offers a historic bar setting. Guest amenities include an outdoor seasonal pool, fitness center with aerobic equipment and free weights, and complimentary WiFi throughout. The hotel sits within 0.5 miles of the Gallup Cultural Center, Downtown Conference Center, and several museums.

Pros

Historic property frequented by Hollywood stars like Spencer Tracy and Kirk Douglas

Ranch-style architecture incorporating authentic local materials like hand-hewn beams

On-site restaurant serving regional Southwestern cuisine daily

Located along original Route 66 with access to Native American cultural sites

Cons

Outdoor pool only available seasonally

Limited dining options within immediate walking distance

“This place strikes me as a loving restoration of a roadside icon. I found the themed rooms charming, even if some are a bit compact. Expect some noise from the nearby highway, but I think the hotel's distinctive character makes it a worthwhile stop.”

Hotel El Rancho is celebrated for its beautifully restored appearance and distinctive western-themed rooms that create a memorable atmosphere. Guests often appreciate the spaciousness of the rooms and the unique decor, such as the Lucille Ball room, where some found a full-length picture with John Wayne on the shower curtain. While some guests have mentioned that the rooms can occasionally feel a bit small, the on-site restaurant and bar consistently receive positive feedback, and the hotel is pet-friendly, which is a definite plus for many travelers.

Step Back in Time, A Good Stay

lobby decoreasy check-inhotel restauranttiny bathroom
The lobby decor showcases Route 66 history. I saw many photos of actors who once stayed there. The front desk service was smooth, and check-in was easy. The food and service at the hotel restaurant were good too.
My bathroom was tiny. It was challenging to move around in such a small space. I found this inconvenient. I hope they improve the space in the future.
Dining
9/10
The restaurant's menu includes drinks named after movie stars. The coasters show sketched portraits of those stars, I found them pretty. It feels like a 1940s respite, offering a cozy setting. I felt romantic there.
